My Therapy Philosophy

Counseling in Uncertain Times, from a Buddhist Perspective

People often ask what I mean by “counseling from a Buddhist perspective”.

Michael H. Kreitsek, MA Transpersonal Counseling Psychology

By this, I  mean actively listening to you with attention and awareness and teaching you to listen with greater awareness.  Buddha means “one who is awake”.  I help you wake up to the patterns of thinking and reacting that limit your life. I myself  began meditating more than 45 years ago,and have been practicing Tibetan Buddhism for over 25 years.

I draw on my clinical psycho-therapeutic training as I use the tools that fit the person I’m working with. I may work differently from client to client, depending on what your personal needs are to grow and change.

My work is Cognitive Behavioral in nature. Essentially this means bringing attention to your thoughts and actions, and making changes with sharpened awareness. I have extensive training in Gestalt Therapy, which brings awareness to your felt experience of living. This often addresses your fear of conflict and how you have experienced trauma, big and small, in your life.

I also work with dreams, drawing on my Jungian and Dream Work training, to help you access the wisdom and guidance dreams can provide you. My experience and training allows me to meet you where you are, honoring your path so you can more authentically be who you are with greater awareness.

I received my BA in Clinical Psychology from Antioch in Santa Barbara, and I received my Masters in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology and clinical graduate training from Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado.

This training specifically included working with spiritual practice and meditation, to support the growth of my clients. However, my work is never to impose a spiritual practice. That is always for you to decide.
